Murphy’s Laws of Combat are known as the “Dummies” guide to combat.

In it you will find all the “bare-bone” skills needed to survive in combat.

Rules 1-10

#1 - You are not Superman

  • Do not think you can “do it alone” because you can’t

#2 - If it’s stupid but works, it isn’t stupid

  • Get the job done…that’s all that is important. Performance over appearance

#3 - Don’t look conspicuous - it draws fire

  • The bigger target/threat you pose the Enemy, the more you risk being targeted

#4 - When in doubt, empty your magazine

  • If you think a situation is going “SOUTH” (bad), do what you have to do to be safe

#5 - Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are

  • If you’re “stuck” with someone braver than you…you’ll be sucked into the Enemy’s wrath

#6 - Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder

  • Be prepared for Plan “B” because if something can break in combat, it will…

#7 - If your attack is going really well, it’s an ambush

  • Be wary of an “easy” fight as it might be the Enemy luring your into a trap

#8 - No plans survives the first contact intact

  • Military planning is important but are simple words on paper, executing those words is much harder to do…

#9 - All five-second grenade fuses will burn down in three seconds

  • Expect the unexpected. If things can go wrong…they will

#10 - Try to look unimportant becuase the bad guys may be low on ammo

  • The higher priority target you present, the higher priority target YOU become

Rules 11-20

#11 - If you are forward of your position, the artillery will fall short

  • Don’t blame others is you fail to coordinate correctly

#12 - The Enemy diversion you are ignoring is the main attack

  • Sometimes, things are simplier than you think

#13 - The important things are always simple

  • Drive the tank to the OBJ…

#14 - The simple things are always hard

  • Do NOT flip tank

#15 - The easy way is always mined

  • Be wary of Avenues of Approach that might just be bait…

#16 - If you are short on everything but Enemy. You are in combat

  • Do not expect to have everything you need to fight…because you won’t.

#17 - When you have secured an area, don’t forget to tell the Enemy

  • Expecting an Enemy counter-attack should ALWAYS be the norm…

#18 - Incoming fire has the right of way

  • You cannot escape effective fire so seek cover, conceal, move and then attack

#19 - Friendly fire - isn’t

  • Make sure you coordinate well with friendlies because friendly fire kills too

#20 - If the Enemy is in range, “SO ARE YOU!!!”

  • Once you have “eyes” on the Enemy…so do they ! !

Rules 21-33

#21 - No combat ready unit has ever passed inspection

  • Stop worrying about shining boots…worry about combat skills

#22 - Beer math is: 2 beers times 37 men = 49 cases

  • This helps remind us of the importance of planning supplies correctly

#23 - Body count math is: two guerillas plus one portable plus two pigs = 37 Enemy killed in action

  • I have no idea what this means…

#24 - Things that must be together to work, usually can’t be shipped together

  • Be wary of equipment that has several components to it (mortar, tripod, heavy machine gun etc)

#25 - Radio’s will fail as soon as you need fire support desperately

  • Always have Plan “B” in case your equipment fails you…

#26 - Anything can get you shot - including doing nothing

  • Remember to always improve your current situation, remaining static may not help you

#27 - Tracers work both ways

  • Tracers and IR lasers help you sight -in the Enemy AND yourself…

#28 - The only thing more accurate than incoming fire is incoming friendly fire

  • If you give your grid coordinates instead of the Enemy’s (always give distance and direction, not grids), expect to be targeted

#29 - Make it tough for the Enemy to get in and you can’t get out

  • A FOB must always have an emergency entrance/exit (and always have alternate ORPs, Rally Points, LZs, DZs etc)

#30 - If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will have more than your fair share of objectives to take

  • Be realistic in setting your objectives or you might bite off more than you can chew

#31 - When both sides are convinced that they are about to lose, they are both right

  • Stay positive and always search for “work” to improve your situation. 1 rifleman can make the difference

#32 - Professional Soldiers are predictable, but the world is full of amateurs

  • Think outside the “box” as the Enemy might do the unexpected

#33 - Murphy was a Grunt

  • This simply let’s you understand that that Murphy is a SME (Subject Matter Expert)

As we see, Murphy’s Laws of Combat remind us to return to the “simple” combat skills.
